Paris - Sat - Musee de Orsay

We hopped the Metro for the musee de orsay. I had high expectations for this impressionist museum and it did not disappoint. I don't remember seeing van gogh's so close before. I was mesmerized by his self portrait -- what a powerful piece. Outside of David by Michelangelo, I think that was the most moving piece we have seen. I enjoyed Monet collection which seemed huge (Bridget says there is a bigger one here), Degas was great, so was Renoir. We saw some good works by Manet, Toulouse Latrec, Pisarro, Gaugain, Sisley, the pointillists (ie Seurat and Cross), and some others I'm sure I'm forgetting. Fiona was exhausted after 2 + hours of this and we had to get her out of there so we headed to the Hotel de les Invalides primarily to see Napoleons tomb.

I left there feeling proud of the Art Institute's collection. I'd like to go there soon to compare the collections. I think Fiona has the same feeling -- we have some great museums in chicago but we rarely go. Also, it seemed as though we were able to get really close to the paintings here. My memory of the Art Institute is that they try to keep you far away.
