Fiona and Dad at Vincente Calderon Stadium

We saw SuperCopa 1st leg - FC Barcelona v Atletico de Madrid.  It was a good, competitive game.  Atletico was extremely physical ad aggressive on defense, even knocking Messi out of the game at halftime.  Atletico opened the scoring in the 12th minute with a beautiful goal by David Villa on a lightning quick counterattack.  Barca evened it up with a nice goal in the 2nd half, but Barca rarely looked dangerous.  Messi was totally contained as was Neymar.  It was an intense game but Barca only had spurts where they were productive and creative.  I thought Cesc did a nice job in the 2nd half coordinating the attack.

This game was more along the lines of what I expected at a European soccer game.  Crazy, passionate fans, Singing through out the game.  As we walked into the Statium plaza there was a large group singing -- a man was holding up a red flare and leading the group.  Luckily Fiona doesn't know much Spanish because there was a lot of swearing at the Barca players and the refs.

By comparison, the crowd in Barca was tame.  It was 7-0 but it was like those fans came for a performance at the opera versus the life and death struggle the Atletico fans game for.
